I think that's true of conservative doctors, but I've met a few who recognize that they don't know everything. I do know that medicine in general has gotten much better at working with transgenders and accepting that yes, it's possible for someone to be born with the wrong sex. Back in the day, when gender reassignment was still something for the headlines, transgendered individuals were regarded as freaks.
It's a one-step-at-a-time kind of deal, but I'm hopeful that within the next couple of generations, doctors will be aware enough of their own limitations not to play the "I know best" card without a great deal of science to back them up.
