Ouch. The conflict here between John and Carson is tricky to explicate but you show it very well. Carson's brusqueness seems true to me and could be read a number of ways: frustration at not being able to heal his patient and help his friend; disappointment that John concealed this information; anger that John's parents pushed John inappropriately; doctorly arrogance that he knows what's "right." Or several, or all of those things!
And meanwhile, John's left in this awful limbo, wounded but unable to be restored without screwing up his life. Those sessions with Kate are going to be something.
The ending feels open, but not in a cliffhanger kind of way; more like that the situation is so difficult to resolve that there's just no easy way to close it out. It feels right to me, even if I do wish John could confide in Rodney and get Rodney to jigger the pod to fix only his leg-- which is what I'm pretending happens sometime later after this story ends. :-)
