In S1, the episode with the invisible chick, he was getting into physics as an attempt to explain what had happened to her. Mostly, though, the Giles in my personal canon has a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity, and I think he'd enjoy talking with Radek, who seems to be a bit more well-rounded than Rodney is when it comes to non-scientific interests.
